Cookbook Reviews: Country Baking Cookbook: Recipes for Freshly Baked Goodies From Grandma's Kitchen

orange divide

Country Baking Cookbook: Recipes for Freshly Baked Goodies From Grandma's Kitchen is one of the popular Gooseberry Patch series of cookbooks.

Remember freshly baked treats from Grandma's kitchen?

Well whether your Grandma was a great baker or not, you can bake those wonderful favorites at home yourself.

I just love this series. You can pretty much pick up any of them and love every recipe.

The Gooseberry Patch cookbooks are down home books with recipes that taste like they have been handed down for generations, and maybe they have.

The Country Baking Cookbook continues the tradition of delicious recipes.

It's packed with easy recipes and contains whole sections of recipes for Biscuits and Rolls, Quick Breads, Muffins and Coffee Cakes, Yeast Breads, Cakes and Pies, Cobblers and Bread Puddings, Turnovers, Tarts and Dumplings and Cookies and Brownies. Many would make perfect "from the kitchen" gifts.

Many of the recipes have been submitted by people like you and me. So you know they are tried and true, not recipes developed in on paper that may or may not work at home.

Here is a small sampling of the wonderful recipes for country baking that you will find in the book:

  • Cinnamon Pull-Apart Bread
  • Maple Walnut Pie
  • Shoo Fly Pie
  • Root Beer Cake
  • Raspberry Crunch Cheesecake
  • Plum Kuchen (a favorite of mine from childhood)
  • Chocolate Lovers Bread Pudding
  • Apple and Cheddar Dumplings

We also have three recipes from the book on our site. Have a look at:

black bread

Black Bread

strawberry muffins

Fresh Strawberry Muffins

chocolate brownies

Chocolate Raspberry Brownies

I also love the binding on these books. The cerlux binding allows the book to lie flat as you use the recipe. No need to find a cookbook stand or something to hold the book flat. It lies nicely on the counter while you refer to it.

The only negative. None of the Gooseberry Patch recipe books have pictures. They have wonderful country inspired illustrations, but no food photos. I have to admit though, as much as I like seeing the image of the prepared dish, I much prefer real recipes that really work.

This cookbook is a definite keeper that will be on by cookbook shelf for years to come.

An actual Customer Review:

Lady Naava writes this about Country Baking Cookbook: Recipes for Freshly Baked Goodies From Grandma's Kitchen:

Country Baking is one of the best Gooseberry Patch cookbooks on the market- especially if you love to bake. I particularly love the recipe for pumpkin biscuits and ginger molasses biscuits. The Farmhouse buttermilk bread is also excellent.

For those who aren't familiar with Gooseberry Patch, each book is filled with great recipes and cute pencil illustrations. Add this one to your collection!
