Cookbook Review: The Harrow Fair Cookbook

orange divide

The Harrow Fair Cookbook: Prize-Winning Recipes Inspired by one of Canada's Oldest Country Fairs is a delightful new cookbook that any Canadian cookbook collector will want in their library.

It is full of delicious comfort food recipes that will make you want to get into the kitchen as soon as possible.

Since 1854, the Harrow Fair has been attracting visitors from near and far to one of the most southern towns in all of Canada.

I had the opportunity to speak with one of the authors of this wonderful cookbook, Lori Elstone.

Lori wrote this cookbook with her sister, Moira Sanders and her cousin Beth Maloney. The sisters grew up near Harrow and have fond childhood memories of the Harrow Fair and the wonderful preserving and baking contests.

As adults, the women entered the contests themselves and many of their own winning recipes, as well as the prize winning recipes of others, are included in this delightful collection.

The recipes in this book reflect the author's belief that when food is made from scratch, with wholesome, natural ingredients, it can't help but be delicious.

I love this cookbook for several reasons.

First, it is a beautiful book, filled with wonderful images. I always think that having an image of the final product is a real help and although not every recipe has an image, several of them do and they look absolutely mouth-watering.

The recipes are varied. The women cover everything from pickles and preserves to salads, main dishes, ice cream and desserts.

This cookbook will bring back memories for many of us, of simpler times, country fairs and the good food entered into contests.

You can keep up the Harrow Fair tradition by making these classic recipes right at home:

It makes me want to travel to the Harrow Fair next year.
