Sweet and Sour Pork Recipe

orange divide

This delicious sweet and sour pork recipe combines pork tenderloin, vegetables and a sweet and tangy sauce into and easy dinner recipe.

I do have to admit that the ingredients list seems long, but it is really a simple recipe.

The trick is to just be a bit organized and get out everything you need ahead of time.

Just place the pork cubes in the marinade first, then go on to chop the vegetables and get the sauce ingredients ready. Once everything is chopped the recipe goes together very easily and quickly.

The whole thing is cooked in a wok and wok cooking is quick. Just make sure it is well heated before you start. Stir everything often as you go too, to make sure everything cooks evenly.

Sweet and Sour Pork

6 green onions, chopped
1 large onion, cut into chunks
1 red pepper, chopped
2 tomatoes, quartered
1 cucumber, seeded and cut into 1" chunks
1 1/2 pounds pork tenderloin, cut into 1" cubes
cornstarch for coating the pork
oil for frying, about 1/4 cup altogether
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1/3 cup water

Marinade:
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
2 teaspoon water
1 egg

Sauce:
2 1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sesame oil
8 tablespoons sugar
8 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon sweet chili sauce
3 tablespoons white vinegar
1 cup water

Combine marinade ingredients. Add meat to marinade and set aside.

Prepare vegetables and set aside.

Heat the wok to medium to high and add 2 tablespoons of oil. Toss meat cubes in the cornstarch, then fry for 5 minutes until golden brown. When finished frying, scrape out wok and add 2 more tablespoons of oil. Fry vegetables for 1 minute, then remove.

Combine the sauce ingredients. Add the mixture to the wok and bring it all to a boil. Combine water and cornstarch to make a thin paste. Add to the sauce. Heat to boiling to thicken. When boiling, add in vegetables, then add in the meat. Serve when sauce has thickened.

Serves 3 to 4

Nice served over fluffy white rice.

Cooking Tips
Variations:

  • Add a can of well drained pineapple chunks for the traditional sweet and sour pork with pineapple.
  • This suggestion is a bit different and not part of the traditional recipe, but adding some cooked or frozen green beans or broccoli will up the vegetable content and makes this a terrific one pan dinner (okay, two with the rice).
