1clovegarlic, crushed or 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder

Season the chicken pieces with salt and pepper. Heat a skillet and the oil or shortening. Brown the chicken pieces in the frying pan. Place them in a 2 quart casserole. Brown the onions, carrots, celery and mushrooms, in batches if necessary. Drain off the fat, then stir in the spices, and wine. Pour all of it over the chicken.
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Cover the casserole and bake for 75 minutes. Remove the bay leaf before serving.
