Heat 10 cups of water and the beans to boiling in a Dutch oven. Boil uncovered for 2 minutes. Stir in the remaining ingredients except the 3 cups of water. Cover and bake for 4 hours, stirring occasionally. Stir in the 3 cups of water.
Bake uncovered for 2 – 2 1/4 hours longer, stirring occasionally, until the beans are tender and desired consistency.
