Healthy Lifestyle

There are several keys to a healthy lifestyle and the benefits of living healthy are certainly worth making the effort.

Healthy foods are obviously a huge part of creating overall health and we have many healthy recipes on the site for you to try. Click here for our list of healthy recipes.

There are other keys to a healthy lifestyle that are essential for maintaining a healthy body.

Here are some important ones:

Eat a Rainbow

That's the phrase nutrition experts use to mean eat a wide variety of foods. The wider the variety of foods we eat, the more nutritionally complete our diets are likely to be.

The colors of our food are not meant to just make them look appetizing. Each color indicates a variety of different vitamins and minerals. Eating a rainbow ensures a healthy mix of nutrients to help our bodies create health and, if necessary, fight disease.

Read our list of the 10 best healthy foods to eat and see why eating a rainbow makes such sense.

Remember Your Vitamins and Minerals

Make sure you get the vitamins and minerals you need for your age and stage of life. This is extremely important and if you are eating the rainbow of foods mentioned above you will be on your way to a healthy lifestyle. But your age and sex can mean you need more or less of a particular nutrient than others in your family. So take the time to learn a little about the right nutritional requirements for you.

Eliminate Trans Fats

One of the most important ways to improve your diet is to eliminate trans fats. Trans fats are not nice to our bodies and are often found in baked goods, snacks and a world of other prepared foods. Become a label reader. Many companies are now eliminating trans fats from their prepared foods and they are your better choices.

How to Read Food Labels

Limit Your Intake of Sugars and Refined Carbohydrates

Our bodies don't really like refined sugars. But we sure do! North Americans are huge consumers of sweet - in desserts, snacks and drinks.

There is a lot of evidence that points to overindulgence in sugar and refined carbohydrates (such as white flour) as being one of the prime causes of high rates of obesity and diabetes in the US and Canada.

Both sugar and white flour cause quick spikes in blood sugar and have little nutritional value, while whole grains provide the fiber our bodies need and enter our system slowly. They provide energy for longer periods, rather than the high energy spike followed by a lull with the simple carbohydrate foods.

Finding simple ways of satisfying our cravings while limiting our intake of sugar and white flour is a key to healthy eating.

Drink Lots of Water

The old advice that we should drink 8 glasses of water a day is still wise. Water hydrates every cell in our bodies, helping to clear away toxins and maintain our bodies at an optimum level. So keep the water flowing - it really is good for us.

Get Plenty of Sleep

Although the exact amount of sleep that is best varies a bit for each of us, getting a solid night's sleep is very important for good health. It allows the body to rest, repair and rejuvenate itself. Lack of sleep over a period of time can lead to inability to concentrate and works against optimum health.

Don't Look For The Quick Fix.

You didn't get this way overnight and you won't fix it overnight. There are many keys to a healthy lifestyle and taking just one small step in the right direction every day will get you there.
