This sweet and sour meatball recipe is baked in the oven, so it’s great if you are looking for recipes that cut the fat.

Using very lean ground meats would help too.

The meatball recipe itself is very tasty. The balls are soft with the addition of some milk. The sweet and sour sauce is a simple mixture, but quite good.

Oven Baked Sweet and Sour Meatball Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 2 cups dry bread crumbs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup white vinegar
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon dry mustard powder

Method

Step 1

Preheat oven to 325ºF.

Step 2

Combine the meats with the bread crumbs, milk, eggs and salt. Mix well. Shape into 1" meatballs and place them in a shallow baking dish.

Step 3

Mix all of the sauce ingredients together (the brown sugar, vinegar, water and dry mustard. Pour the mixture over the meatballs. Bake uncovered at 325ºF for 45 minutes. Baste the meatballs often with the sauce to keep them moist.

Makes about 48 meatballs, depending on the size you make them.

Notes:

  • These yummy little meatballs are great as a hot appetizer recipe, or serve them as a main course over rice.
  • If you are making them as appetizers, I would make the meatballs a bit smaller than if you are serving them as a main course. To serve, simply provide toothpicks or small skewers to pick them up hands free and put the sweet and sour sauce in a small bowl for extra dipping.
