Black Bean Burgers

Black Bean Burgers

I love this simple recipe for black bean burgers.

I do love a good hamburger, but there are times I prefer a non-meat burger, or veggie burgers (as they are often called even if they don’t contain many veggies).

When I want a veggie burger that is easy to make and tastes fantastic, I often turn to my favorite black bean burger recipe.

This recipe for black bean patties is SO yummy I want them often. I don’t even always wait for days when I have buns on hand. I’ll make them and pair them with a great salad and something like my cauliflower rice.

I leaned towards the flavors of Mexico when I made this recipe.

I think black beans really suit Mexican flavors like cumin. Cumin is such a wonderful warm spice that adds a real richness to the black beans.

These black bean burgers are full of healthy ingredients as you will see below. Plus warm spices that amp up the flavor of the burgers and make these a real savory treat.

This black bean burger recipe is also gluten free. If you have celiac disease or otherwise really need to eat totally gluten free, please make sure that your oats are gluten free. Oats should be gluten free (oats are gluten free by nature) but they are often processed in facilities that also process wheat and wheat products.

How to Make Black Bean Patties

Making black bean burger patties is pretty simple.

There are two main things to take into consideration:

1. Making the black bean burger recipe taste delicious and…

2. Making sure they hold together.

Let’s look at how to make a can of black beans turn into fantastic savory black bean burgers.

To me onions and garlic are a must have. Black beans have that nice savory richness that just calls out for onions and garlic. (Well in my mind, almost anything savory calls out for onions and garlic, so they are a must have here.)

Then we have to spice up our vegetarian burgers. I love the warm spices of Mexico for this burger recipe, because I think they complement the black beans well. So the first spice I turn to is cumin.

Cumin is a wonderful spice that adds a warm rich flavor to your cooking. I use it often in things like chili, tacos, burritos and Indian curries.

Turmeric is our next addition. It’s added a lot in curries, but doesn’t add a curry flavor. And it is amazingly healthy for us.

I always add a small amount of cayenne pepper for a slight bit of heat. Cayenne pepper is really great for our digestive systems and adds a great flavor as well as bringing that bit of heat. You can adjust the amount of cayenne you use to amp up the heat level if you want. You can also replace the cayenne pepper with chopped fresh jalapeno peppers or add your favorite hot sauce. All of these will work and will add not only give you the level of heat you want, but add great flavor too.

Fresh cilantro is the last flavor booster I add. Chopped fresh cilantro really amps up the flavor and adds a fresh brightness that makes these black bean patties really delicious.

And of course, salt and pepper to your taste. The black bean patties will need some salt and pepper to make the best of all of the other goodies we’ve added to the burgers.

So that’s all you need to make these vegetarian burgers taste delicious.

What holds them together in this recipe is the oats. Oats are a wonderful binder. They are a great ingredient when you want to hold something together. Many people use oats in their meatloaf. (Here’s my recipe for meatloaf with oats.)

The patty mixture will be sticky when you mix it all together. Just gently form the bean mixture into patties and place them in the frying pan. You’ll find that they hold together well once they are cooked.

You can also coat the patties with a bit of flour just before cooking them. I don’t want the extra flour, so I do without that, but it is certainly an option if you want.

Topping your Black Bean Burgers

Of course, like any burger, you can top these black bean burger patties any way you want.

I love them with onions, lettuce and tomatoes.

A bit of salsa on top really does the trick for me. I think it pairs really well with the Mexican inspired spices in the burger.

Melt you favorite cheese on top for a real treat. Or top the burgers with some crumbled blue cheese or goat cheese. How fantastic would that be?

Bacon? Of course. It’s a burger. Why not?

Plus mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, whatever else strikes your fancy.

Whether you choose to use them as a burger in a bun or a patty on the plate I think you will love these vegetarian burgers. Let me know what you think.
